Resolving Stress - Yes, It Is Possible!
We have a tendency to believe that stress is a modern invention, created sometime in the 80's when it became the 'in' thing. However, stress has been, well, stressing us out for hundreds and thousands of years. In days of old, when we needed to hunt and gather to survive, in times of danger the fight or flight response would kick in and save the day. This natural response was the very first symptom of stress and we've inherited it.
Stress has had some bad press, but if you consider life without it, imagine how dull, boring and inactive our lives would actually be. As with everything in life, moderation is the key. We all need goals and challenges to fuse our lives with energy, however when we have stress overload, that's when the affects can be damaging.
Negative stress is the damaging kind, suffering with this type of stress, you'll feel overwhelmed and jittery, prone to depression and in some cases, your physical health can actually be affected.
Stress can be triggered by a limitless number of factors, with the top ten being bereavement, divorce, empty nest syndrome, long-term illness and disability, marriage, moving house, new job, holidays and of course, work.
Negative stress manifests itself in:
* Increased irritability
* Heightened sensitivity to criticism
* Signs of tension, such as nail-biting
* Difficulty getting to sleep and early morning waking
* Drinking and smoking more
* Indigestion
* Loss of concentration
We all have a manageable threshold, a temperature gauge as it were that monitors our stress levels. As with everything in life, this threshold varies, some people have a particularly high threshold, with others unable to cope with even the slightest hint of stress. This threshold depends upon a number of factors, from self-confidence and esteem to the stability of our lives in general. So long as our stress levels are controlled and never top our individual threshold, we can function as normal. However, if you're always riding that line then any additional stress may threaten to completely overload you, until you feel completely out of control.
When analysing your stress levels, you need to question whether you're dealing with it appropriately, or if your reactions are disproportionate to the situation. When you answer that, then you'll discover how high or low your threshold actually is.
